Change Gears — Detailed Overview
The Change Gears tool on Gears4u.com is designed to help machinists, hobbyists, and engineers determine the correct gear train configuration needed to achieve a specific gear ratio on a lathe, milling, hobbing or other machine with change gears trains.
It saves time and reduces mistakes by automatically exploring all valid gear combinations based on available change gears in machine gears set.
Cahnge Gears tool can:
Calculate a suitable set of change gears to achieve a desired gear ratio
Ensure that the ratio error stays within a user‑specified tolerance
Uses only the gears that the user has defined as available in their machine’s gear set
Support usage of multiple gears with the same tooth count as distinct gears in the train if available in machine set
Provide multiple sets and can verify mountabililty to eliminate sets which have correct ratio but can not be correctly installed
As input user have to provide:
Desired gear train ratio
Maximum allowable ratio error
Machine gears set to use during selection
Machine gear train geometry if mountability verification is requested
Gears module
Shaft centers distance
Min and Max sum of teeth for each train step
Min and Max step ratio for each train step
As output tool generates:
Possible gear train configurations with
Ratio achieved vs. target ratio
Ratio error percentage
